🔍 Find a piece
Type in the search box: a title (“Greensleeves”), a study (“Kreutzer 2”, “Wohlfahrt 15”), a scale (“D major arpeggio”, “C# minor”, “grade 5 chromatic”) or a sight-reading piece (“sight G3 12”). Use ↑ ↓ and Enter, or tap a result. The search looks in Aria’s libraries (Studio songs, Famous songs, studies, scales and sight-reading) and in your own songs on this device (My songs). Your own songs have a ✕ beside them: tap it, then Remove?, to take one off this device.
Prefer to look through a list? Press 📚 Browse. The tabs at the top (Studio songs, Famous songs, Studies, Scales, Sight-reading, My songs) each have rows that fold open. A small dot on a tab shows where the piece that is open now lives.
◀ Last and Next ▶ (at the right of the title) open the piece before or after in the same list, for example the next Wohlfahrt study or the next of your own songs. To rename one of your own MIDI songs, click its title above the music, type the new name and press Enter.
▶ Play, step and practise
Press ▶ Play to listen, or Next ▶ and ◀ Back to go one note at a time while you watch the fingers on the fingerboard. ⏮ goes back to the first note. Tap any note on the music to jump to it, or type a bar number in Go to bar.
A good way to learn a piece: start in Learn, step through it slowly and say each finger out loud. Then press Play at a slow tempo and play along. When you know it, untick 🎻 Violin tune and play with the backing only, then try Practise (no fingerboard) and Read (just the music, like the exam). Press ☆ I can play it! when you can.
📌 keeps the page still, so the music doesn’t scroll by itself while you play or choose notes.
📝 Song quiz
Press 📝 Song quiz (above the music) for 10 questions about the piece that is open: the key signature, the time signature, the lowest and highest notes, the longest and shortest note values, rests, shifts, and double stops or chords. Look at the music and answer each question yourself first, then press Show answer to check. Tap a bar number in an answer to go to that bar.
The answers follow the fingering on the music, so if you change the fingering, the answers about positions and shifts change too.
The last question asks which part will need the most practice, and why. Write your answer in the box: it is saved on this device for each song. Press 📋 Copy or 💾 Save or share to send it to your teacher, or bring it to your lesson.
♩ Tempo, volume and count-in
Use − and + beside the tempo, or tap the tempo for the slider and the practice speeds. You can count the beat in crotchets (♩) or quavers (♪). 🔊 sets how loud the backing and the violin tune are: Backing louder keeps a quiet guide, and 🎤 Perform plays the backing only.
The tempo goes from 30 up to 240 beats a minute.
Count-in plays 1 or 2 bars of clicks before the music starts. Choose 2 bars if the sound comes late (Bluetooth speakers, slow devices).
⚙ The options
- View: Read / Practise / Learn sets several options at once: Read shows just the music, Practise adds the fingers and strings, Learn adds the fingerboard and the note names.
- 🎹 Backing: the piano (or the other parts of a MIDI file). 🎻 Violin tune: the melody.
- Sound when stepping: hear each note when you press Next or Back.
- Fingerboard: show the fingerboard above the Play bar (the 🎻 button on the bar does the same).
- Note names: the letter name under each note (C, D, E …). Solfa name: the solfa name in fixed do under it: C = do, D = re, E = mi, F = fa, G = sol, A = la, B = ti. Sharps and flats keep the same name, so C♯ and C♭ are both do. Tick both, or just one.
- Fingers, Strings, Chord names: what else is written on the music.
- 🎼 Key signature & arrangement: how the music is written. See “Your own MIDI files” below.
Note information (under the options) shows the note you are on, its fingering and the Quick edit buttons. Tap its heading to fold it away when you don’t need it; the page remembers.
✎ Change the fingering
You can change the string, the finger and the position for your own practice. Your changes are saved on this device and go into Export song and Download PDF.
- Tap a note on the music (or on the fingerboard).
- Then either press a key: 0–4 for the finger, G D A E for the string, Shift+1–9 for the position;
- or open Quick edit ▾ in Note information (tap it; it stays open next time) and use the String, Finger and Position buttons;
- or choose from Fingering for this note. Tick “Only change this one note” if the same note comes again and you want to change just this one.
↶ Undo and ↷ Redo (Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y) go back and forward up to 100 steps. Go back to the original takes away all your changes to this piece.
☰ Choose several notes
On a computer: Shift-click to choose a run of notes, Ctrl-click (⌘-click on a Mac) to add one note, or Shift+→ / ←. Esc clears.
On a phone or tablet: tick Choose several notes (tap each one) in Quick edit, then tap the notes. ⇔ Fill the gap also chooses every note in between; ✕ Clear starts again. Then press a string, finger or position: it changes all the chosen notes.
📋 Copy, paste and find the same notes
When a tune comes back, you can give it the same fingering in one go:
- Choose the notes and press 📋 Copy (Ctrl+C).
- Press 🔍 Find same notes (Ctrl+F): every place with exactly the same notes turns orange. Next ▶ (F3) goes to the next one.
- Press 📥 Paste to all found (Ctrl+Shift+V, or Ctrl+V while they are orange), or tap one place and press 📥 Paste (Ctrl+V).
⌒ Slurs, ties, marks, bowings and hairpins (teacher mode)
Choose the notes (see “Choose several notes”), then press S or ⌒ Slur in Quick edit to slur them. With one note chosen, it is slurred to the next note. Shift+S or Slur off takes the slur away.
A tie joins two notes of the same pitch that are next to each other: choose the first one (or both) and press T or ‿ Tie. The tied note keeps the same fingering. Shift+T or Tie off takes it away.
Staccato and tenuto: choose the note(s) and press * for a staccato dot or - for a tenuto line (or • Staccato and – Tenuto in Quick edit). Press the same key again to take it off.
Bowings: press V for an up-bow or M for a down-bow (or V Up-bow and ⊓ Down-bow). Press the same key again to take it off.
Crescendo and diminuendo: choose a group of notes and press H for a crescendo (<) or J for a diminuendo (>); with one note chosen, it goes to the next note. To take one off, click the hairpin under the music (its notes are chosen) and press the same key again.
♯ Change a note (teacher mode)
Notes joined by a tie move together: change one and the notes tied to it change with it, and the tie stays.
Tap a note and press ↑ or ↓ to move it a step (line → space). Right-click a note for a menu with steps, ♭ ♮ ♯ 𝄪 𝄫, the length, the fingering and Delete, or open ✎ Change this note in Note information to pick the letter, sharp or flat, octave and length.
A longer note uses up the rest after it in the same bar (a quaver + a quaver rest can become a crotchet); a shorter note leaves a rest after it; a deleted note becomes a rest of the same length. For teachers: edit the fingering and the music shows the whole piece as code you can edit, copy and paste.
📂 Your own MIDI files (importing)
Press 📂 Choose a MIDI file under the search box, or drag a .mid file onto the page. The file is read in your web browser and never leaves your device. You can choose (or drag) many MIDI files and song files at once: they all go into My songs, and the search box finds them. Most music programs can save MIDI: in MuseScore (free) choose File → Export → MIDI; Sibelius, Finale, Dorico, GarageBand and Logic can too. Please only use music you are allowed to use.
Jianpu (in the options) shows the music in Chinese numbered notation under the staff: 1= follows the key signature, a dot above or below a number means an octave higher or lower, lines under a number are quavers (one line) and semiquavers (two), a dot after a number makes it longer by half, and each – holds the note for one more beat. Slurs, ties, staccato, accents, bowings, pauses and dynamics are copied from the staff, so any change to the music shows in the jianpu too. When the music is moved to another key, only the 1= changes; the numbers stay the same. Untick Manuscript to read the jianpu only.
Jianpu key changes: when the music changes key, choose those notes (Shift-click, or “Choose several notes”), right-click them (on a phone: Quick edit → Jianpu 1= …) and pick the key, for example 1=G. Only the jianpu changes; the staff stays the same. With one note chosen, the new 1= goes from that note to the end. The key changes are saved with the song and go into Export song.
The page finds the part that carries the tune, tidies the rhythm, works out the key and picks a string and finger for every note (1st position and open strings first, with as few shifts as possible). The other parts become the backing. Your files are kept under 📚 Browse → My songs, on this device only.
If something looks wrong, open 🎼 Key signature & arrangement: choose the Key signature to write the music in (★ = fewest accidentals), try Up-beat if the music starts before the first strong beat, Time if the time signature is wrong, Rhythm: Quavers (simplest) if it looks too busy, Tune to pick another part, Octave, Bars to show only part of a long piece. To move the music to another key, use Transpose beside ☆ I can play it!, with ↑ Up or ↓ Down. Back to the automatic settings undoes them.
⇈ Octave up and ⇊ Octave down (beside Transpose) move the whole piece an octave. A button is greyed out when the music would go below the open G string or too high for the violin. Back to the automatic settings puts it back.
📁 Folders in My songs
When you import many files at once (or a .zip), they go into a new folder in 📚 Browse → My songs, named with the date, for example 22 Oct 2026. A second import on the same day is 22 Oct 2026 (2). Songs you open one at a time go under Other songs.
- Rename: click the folder’s name, type the new name and press Enter (Esc cancels). Giving it the name of another folder puts the two folders together.
- Open or close: tap 📁 or the number of songs.
- 📦 Export: saves just that folder’s songs, with their fingering, in one file. Open it with 📥 on any device to get the folder back.
- 🗑 Delete: tap 🗑, then tap again (“Delete 3 songs? Tap again”) to delete the folder and all its songs from this device. Export it first if you might want it again.
- ◀ Last and Next ▶ go through the songs in the same folder. The search box finds folder names too.
- 💾 Back up all my songs and 📦 Export each song (.zip) keep the folders.
💾 Save, print and share
- ⬇ Download PDF: the music to print, showing only what is ticked in the options (Fingers, Strings, Note names, Solfa name, Jianpu, Manuscript, Chord names).
- 💾 Export song: one small .txt file with the music, your settings and your fingering. Send it to a student or a friend; they press 📥 Import a song file (under the search box) and get exactly your version. Please don’t edit the file: a song file that was changed outside the app won’t open.
- 💾 Back up all my songs (in Browse → My songs): every song in one file, to move to another computer or tablet.
- 📦 Export each song (.zip) (also in My songs): every song as its own song file, all in one .zip. Open the .zip with 📂 or 📥 to bring them all back. 🗑 Clear all my songs then takes them off this device (tap it twice).
- 📦 Export on a folder in My songs: just that folder’s songs, in one file.
- 🎵 Download MIDI (teacher mode): what you hear on Play, at the tempo on the slider. A Violin track when 🎻 Violin tune is ticked and its volume is above 0 %, a Backing track when 🎹 Backing is ticked and above 0 %; the 🔊 volumes set each track’s level. Violin at 0 % gives a backing-only file.
