Jianpu Erhu Fingerboard

The erhu (二胡) has two strings, tuned to D and A like the violin’s middle strings, and its music is written in jianpu. Choose the key (1=D, 1=G, 1=C…) to see every note on the inner and outer strings as a jianpu number with its octave dots, the erhu tuning name (15弦, 52弦…) and the fingers for 1st position.

Rows go up one semitone at a time, so the spacing shows the pattern but isn’t the real finger spacing on an erhu. The plain (no-dot) 1 is the tonic from middle C upward, as in erhu music: in 1=D the inner open string is plain 1 (15弦); in 1=G it is low 5 (52弦). Finger numbers are shown for 1st position (第一把位); tap any note further down to hear higher positions. Use ▼ ▲ if your music uses a different octave. A4 = 440 Hz.

The erhu: China’s two-string fiddle

The erhu (二胡, “two strings”) is the best-known member of the huqin (胡琴) family of Chinese bowed instruments, and is often called the Chinese violin. A long neck rises from a small, usually hexagonal resonator covered with python skin. Two strings, tuned to D and A, run over a little wooden bridge and are held to the neck by the qianjin (千斤), a loop of cord that works like a violin’s nut. There is no fingerboard: the player presses the strings in the air, and the bow hair passes between the two strings, so the bow never leaves the instrument.

Its ancestors go back more than a thousand years to the Tang dynasty. Long a folk instrument, the erhu became a concert solo instrument in the 1920s through the composer Liu Tianhua (刘天华), and the blind street musician Abing (阿炳) left one of its most loved pieces, Erquan Yingyue (《二泉映月》, “The Moon Reflected in the Second Spring”). Today it plays everything from folk songs to film scores, usually read from jianpu.

What is the erhu?

The erhu (二胡) is a two-stringed bowed instrument, often called the Chinese violin or Chinese two-string fiddle. It has a small resonator covered with python skin, a long neck with no fingerboard, and a bow whose hair passes between the two strings. Its ancestors go back to the Tang dynasty, and in the 1920s Liu Tianhua (刘天华) helped make it a concert solo instrument.

How is the erhu tuned, and what does “15弦” mean?

The inner string (内弦) is D4 and the outer string (外弦) is A4, a fifth apart. Erhu players name each key by what the two open strings are in jianpu: 1=D is 15弦 (inner 1, outer 5), 1=C is 26弦, 1=G is 52弦, 1=F is 63弦 and 1=A is 41弦. This page shows the tuning name for every key.

What do the dots above and below the numbers mean on erhu?

A dot below means one octave lower and a dot above means one octave higher; two stacked dots mean two octaves. On erhu the plain 1 is the tonic from middle C upward, so in 1=D the inner open string is plain 1, while in 1=G it is low 5 (5 with a dot below).

Can I play erhu music on the violin?

Yes. The erhu’s two strings are the same notes as the violin’s D and A strings, so erhu melodies written in jianpu fit naturally on the violin. Aria’s Violin Studio in Pakuranga, Auckland teaches one-to-one violin lessons, and lessons are built around the music each student wants to play.
