Jianpu Zhonghu Fingerboard

The zhonghu (中胡) is the alto erhu, tuned a perfect fifth lower, to G and D, the same notes as the violin’s two lowest strings. Choose the key (1=G, 1=C, 1=D…) to see every note on the inner and outer strings as a jianpu number with its octave dots, the tuning name (15弦, 52弦…) and the fingers for 1st position.

Rows go up one semitone at a time, so the spacing shows the pattern but isn’t the real finger spacing on a zhonghu. The plain (no-dot) 1 is the tonic from middle C upward, the same as on the erhu page, so in 1=G the open strings are low 1 and low 5 (15弦). Finger numbers are shown for 1st position (第一把位); tap any note further down to hear higher positions. Use ▼ ▲ if your music uses a different octave. A4 = 440 Hz.

The zhonghu: the alto erhu

The zhonghu (中胡, “middle huqin”) is the alto voice of the huqin family of Chinese bowed instruments. It is built like the erhu, with a long neck, two strings held by the qianjin (千斤) cord, no fingerboard, and the bow hair passing between the strings. But it is larger, with a bigger snakeskin-covered resonator, thicker strings and a heavier bow. It is tuned a perfect fifth lower than the erhu, usually to G and D (some orchestras use A and E), and has a deep, mellow, singing tone.

The zhonghu was developed in the mid-20th century, as the modern Chinese orchestra grew and needed a middle voice between the erhu and the low gehu and dihu. In the orchestra it plays a role much like the viola: harmony, long sustained lines and rich inner melodies. It also has its own solo repertoire. Like the erhu, its music is usually read from jianpu.

Questions ·
What is the zhonghu?

The zhonghu (中胡, “middle huqin”) is the alto member of the huqin family of Chinese bowed instruments, often called the alto erhu. It looks like an erhu but has a larger snakeskin-covered body and thicker strings, giving a deep, mellow tone. It was developed in the mid-20th century to fill the middle voice of the modern Chinese orchestra, a role much like the viola’s.

How is the zhonghu tuned?

The inner string (内弦) is G3 and the outer string (外弦) is D4, a perfect fifth below the erhu’s D4 and A4, and the same notes as the violin’s G and D strings. Some players and orchestras tune it to A and E instead. Players name each key by the open strings in jianpu: on zhonghu 1=G is 15弦, 1=C is 52弦, 1=D is 41弦, 1=F is 26弦 and 1=B♭ is 63弦.

Can an erhu player play the zhonghu?

Yes. The finger patterns are the same, just a fifth lower: a zhonghu tune in 1=G (15弦) uses the same fingering as an erhu tune in 1=D (15弦). The bigger instrument needs a little wider finger spacing and a heavier bow stroke.

Can I play zhonghu music on the violin or viola?

Yes. The zhonghu’s G and D strings are the same notes as the violin’s and viola’s G and D strings, so its melodies fit naturally on either instrument. Aria’s Violin Studio in Pakuranga, Auckland teaches one-to-one violin lessons built around the music each student wants to play.

How to read it: in 1=C, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 are C D E F G A B (do re mi fa sol la ti). A dot under a number means one octave lower, and a dot on top means one octave higher. Start with 1=G, which is 15弦 on the zhonghu: the inner open string is 1 and the outer open string is 5, with the same finger pattern as the erhu in 1=D. Play erhu too?
