Jianpu Viola Fingerboard

For players who read Chinese numbered notation. Choose the key (1=C, 1=G, 1=D…) and every note on the viola’s C, G, D and A strings turns into its jianpu number. A dot underneath means one octave lower, and a dot on top means one octave higher. Finger numbers show where each note goes in 1st, 2nd or 3rd position.

Rows go up one semitone at a time, so the spacing shows the pattern but isn’t the real finger spacing on a viola. The plain (no-dot) 1 is placed in the middle of the viola’s range, e.g. for 1=C it is middle C (C4) on the G string. High notes switch from alto clef to treble clef, as in viola music. Use ▼ ▲ if your music uses a different octave. A4 = 440 Hz.

How to read jianpu on the viola

Jianpu (简谱) is the Chinese numbered notation used for countless Chinese songs, folk tunes and orchestra parts. Instead of notes on a staff, it writes the scale as numbers: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 = do re mi fa sol la ti. The key is written at the top, e.g. 1=D, and dots above or below a number move it up or down an octave. This fingerboard shows exactly where each number sits on the C, G, D and A strings, and which finger plays it.

Questions ·
What does 1=C mean in jianpu?

It tells you which note is “do”. In 1=C, the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 are C D E F G A B (do re mi fa sol la ti). In 1=D, 1 is D; in 1=B♭, 1 is B♭, and so on. Choose the key on this fingerboard and every note is relabelled for you.

What do the dots above and below jianpu numbers mean?

A dot below a number means one octave lower; two dots stacked below mean two octaves lower. A dot above means one octave higher; two dots above mean two octaves higher. For 1=C, middle C (C4) is plain 1 — 3rd finger on the G string. The open C string is 1 with a dot below, and C5 on the A string is 1 with a dot above.

Which finger plays each jianpu note on the viola?

Pick the key and the position (1st, 2nd or 3rd). Coloured finger numbers 0–4 appear on the C, G, D and A strings, and a small gold mark shows where two fingers touch (a half step). The pattern changes with the key — that is the most useful thing to learn.

How is the viola page different from the violin page?

The viola has C, G, D and A strings — a fifth lower than the violin — and its music is written in the alto clef, switching to treble clef for high notes. The jianpu numbers work the same way: plain 1 is the one nearest middle C.

How to read it: in 1=C, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 are C D E F G A B (do re mi fa sol la ti). A dot under a number means one octave lower, and a dot on top means one octave higher. Try 1=C or 1=G first, because every open string is in those keys. Playing violin too? Use the Jianpu Violin Fingerboard.
